Massive Floods Hit Jakarta and…. Social Media?

Monday, March 13, 2017

Rain, rain, go away.

Come again another day..?

Maybe that’s what most Jakarta citizens said in their prayers when their hometown was struck by heavy overnight rain throughout this week ever since Monday (February 20th). What happened next was predictable. Yes, thousands of homes and roads in Jakarta were flooded! Some areas were even flooded with water as high as 1.5 m on Tuesday (February 21st).

According to the Jakarta Post, The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB)’s spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho explained via press release that the floods occurred because the city’s drainage system couldn’t accommodate the overflowing water. He also said that the floods hit at least 54 areas in South Jakarta, East Jakarta, and North Jakarta.

Due to the high-water levels, many workers were forced to stay home and some schools temporarily closed for safety reasons. There were even two hashtags used to talk about the floods, which were #JakartaBanjir (6,959 posts) and #JakartaSurut (1,234 posts).
