#MayDay2017: From Support Labourers to Burn Garlands

As we know, 1st may is well-known as Labor Day or May Day which is the celebration of labourers and working classes around the world. Labour takes a day off during the day and most of them use this chance as they do the demonstration in a big city to send their aspiration such as improvement of workers’ wages, removal of outsourcing, and the addition of social security.

Many people took May Day as part of showing their support and gratitude to labour. Without participate on demonstration, they use social media to share their thought on May Day. In Indonesia, more than 100,000 participated in this act which came from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwarkarta. They planned to have a long march to Istana Merdeka and held the act there. Taken from, Said Iqbal as president of Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Indonesia (KSPI) tells that other than three issues, they also voiced that government should remove PP 78/2015 because it makes their welfare and protection as worker fallen dramatically.

Unfortunately, one of incident happens during this day which is the act of some labour burns a garland that was given to Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, by the community. Some sources say it was a spontaneous act. This situation also being a buzz around social media with many people speculates on why that supposed to happen.

So, it’s not the first time in Indonesia celebrate Labor Day that always relates to the act of giving aspiration to the government but it won’t close the possibility of incidents like this happen again. As a citizen, we just hope to be clean, fair, and peace act that won’t deliver any panicking around the community.
